Opportunity #1
Title: Will you run into red tide during your next weekend
Gulf coast getaway? Possibly.
Description of the story: Many families who usually vacation
over on the Gulf Coast are staying clear recently because of a toxic algae
bloom called red tide. Many hotels that bank on tourists coming to the coast
have seen a drop in their sales from July to August. The reason it has been
taken so seriously is on August 13, Governor Rick Scott issued a state of
emergency in the area.
Description of the problem: Nobody wants to go to the Gulf
Coast because there is toxic algae in the water. This is not only an issue for
the beach, but also for the tourist hotspots around the area. In response, many
hotels are offering cheaper deals, but the booking rates are still down.
WHO has the problem: All people living along the Gulf Coast
in the counties that are in emergency mode and all tourists who had previously
planned trips there or who had wanted to plan a trip.
Opportunity #2
Title: The eggs are ‘cage free,’ but are recalled because
they might not be salmonella free
Description of the story: Gravel Ridge Farms is a large
producer of eggs all over the southeast USA, and was told recently that their
eggs may contain salmonella. The company recalled their eggs after the FDA came
out with this test result.
Description of the problem: If their eggs are proven to have
salmonella this could have harmed many people already, and the company is going
to be under some fire. For any food company, a report from the FDA saying that
your product may have salmonella and you have to recall the eggs is a huge
dilemma.
WHO has the problem: All of the people who buy eggs from
Gravel Ridge Farms and all of the employees of Gravel Ridge Farms have the
problem, but from two different aspects.
Opportunity #3
Title: Waiting for a red light in Miami? These cameras may
have set it up that way
Description of the story: In Miami, there is an $11 Million
camera and traffic light system that is intended to analyze the traffic and
expedite the process to avoid traffic. The patterns of the drivers are
estimated to give hopefully a short wait to anybody at the light. Sometime the
program has proven to be very successful, and sometimes it has failed or
tricked drivers.
Description of the problem: Although sometimes the system is
very efficient, on other occasions the strange patterns of the lights have
teased drivers into thinking it is their turn to drive, when it is really not.
Furthermore, the system tries to hold green lights on US 1 since that is the
most crowded road during rush hour. Therefore, the drivers on the roads off of
US 1 can get held up easily.
WHO has the problem: People who are driving in Miami and get
annoyed by the strange pattern of adaptive traffic lights.
Opportunity #4
Title: Miami sneaker boutique shutters store, frustrating resellers
who haven’t been paid
Description of the story: Many resellers of shoes and
merchandise supplied sneaker and clothing boutique, Sneak Attack, with a lot of
their inventory. On September 1, Sneak Attack closed indefinitely, and they
were two months back on the payments owed to these resellers. The resellers
were told that they would have already received their payments or items.
Description of the problem: These resellers got a lot of
merchandise taken, and have not received payment or their merchandise back. The
shop is being very sketchy. Now that the store is closed, I don’t know what the
resellers are going to do.
WHO has the problem: The store is feeling a lot of heat for
this move, and the resellers need their money back as soon as possible.
Opportunity #5
Title: A million fewer people will fly out of Fort
Lauderdale airport next summer. Here’s why
Description of the story: Fort Lauderdale airport will be
closing its north runway from June to October 2019 for renovations. According
to the airport’s fiscal predictions, over one million less flights will be
flying into this airport. They will still fly to all the same destinations, but
in lower quantities.
Description of the problem: Fort Lauderdale airport is one
of the largest airports in the United States and is constantly busy. Without
this north runway operating, not only is the south runway going to be slammed,
but also the surrounding airports of Miami and Palm Beach are going to be
packed.
Who has the problem: People who prefer or need to fly out of
FLL have an issue. Furthermore, there could be a problem with crowds for all
the workers and tourists at Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Palm Beach airports.
