Reading Reflection #1

The biography that I chose to discuss is Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. I chose this biography because I use Apple appliances daily and was curious about this story.

1) What surprised you the most?
I was very surprised that this was the only book about Steve Jobs’s life that he agreed to participate with. He was such a powerful figure and was repeatedly asked to give interviews and books, but he just decided to do this one.

What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
What I admired about Steve Jobs was that he could do it all. Not only did he create these products for Apple, but he was also a key employee for Pixar, and he supported a lot of the company.

What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
The part that I didn’t admire about Jobs is that he didn’t put a lot of effort into the name Apple. He could have been a tad more creative with that.

Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure?  If so, what did they do about it?
The adversity that Jobs faced in his life was his health problems and the issue he had parting ways with Apple. As he got unhealthy, he sort of took less of a role in the company, but his legacy of course lived on.

2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
Jobs’s main success came in the technological industry. His knowledge was vast and he used his job experience from past employment to assist the progress of Apple. He was great with sales and marketing which boosted the company.

3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
The part of the text that confused me was as to why Jobs was put up for adoption because his father and him had differing religious beliefs.

4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask?  Why?
Question 1: Do you believe that you have done more for any company than any other entrepreneur?
Why: Apple is one of the most notable companies in the entire world, and he is the brain behind it. I am curious to know what he thinks of himself and his level of humbleness.

Question 2: What new kind of Apple product would you invent now?
Why: There are always new, exciting products coming out, and he has such a brilliant mind. I am curious to see how he views technology is transforming.

5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work?  Do you share that opinion?
Steve Jobs definitely had a mindset that hard work is the only way to be truly successful. Without his endless hours of work, who knows if Apple would even be around today, or if it would be as big as it is. I share that opinion, but I don’t think my work ethic is up to the standards of Mr. Jobs.
