The book that I
decided to do for this reading reflection was How to Fail at Almost
Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams.
The main theme in this book
is to push through adversity and not let anything hold you back. It is tough to
always push through these failures, but you just have to think that you can
learn from these hard times and use the lessons you learned for future
reference. The way to stay positive and motivated is working on yourself and
keeping your best interests in mind. Furthermore, not everything is always
going to be handed to you. Most times, to achieve something difficult, you are
going to have to grind hard.
The book relates to what we are taught in ENT3003 because it
shows that we need to go after our ideas and not wait for anything to come to
us. Also, all of the comments and critiques we get in this class go along with
what Adams experienced. In specific, the Idea Napkin and Elevator Pitches get
changed with every retry.
An exercise I would create for this class based on the book is
some sort of activity that reflects upon the hardships that one has had or the
toughest adversity one has had to face. The reflection would be upon how the
person got through the adversity and how they could use this in their daily
life.
The biggest aha moment in this book for me was when Adams
claimed that it is basically necessary to be selfish in this world. This is not
usually a trait you hear claimed by people who are successful. He means it in
the way that you need to work on yourself and make sure you are well off before
others. This is kind of a greedy mindset but it works if you need to thrive.
